Whether you're a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan or a fan of four of the nation's top 25 college football teams, then you're probably a little less happy than you were yesterday at this time. Earnhardt, in spite of a nice run where he ran as high as second, had an engine blow with seven laps to go in last night's Chevy Rock & Roll 400 in Richmond, Virginia. He would wind up finishing 30th, and out of the NASCAR chase where the top 12 drivers race for the 2007 Championship. Future Earnhardt teammate Jimmie Johnson won for the second straight week to secure the #1 seed over teammate Jeff Gordon who finished fourth.
In college football, Michigan was stunned last week as they lost to unknown Appalachian State... Apparently the Wolverines were still suffering from a hangover of sorts as they were demolished by the unranked Oregon Ducks 39-7! With Notre Dame getting beaten 31-10 by #14 Penn State, it means next week we will have what in effect could be called the "Disappointment Bowl" as the 0-2 Wolveries face the 0-2 Fighting Irish... Fortunately, my #13 ranked UCLA Bruins were not one of the teams upset yesterday as they took a quick 20-3 lead over Brigham Young and then held on for a 27-17 win.
Some other prominent programs weren't so fortunate. #22 Boise State was upended 24-10 by the Washington Huskies. #17 Auburn lost 26-23 in overtime to South Florida. #9 Virginia Tech was absolutely crushed 48-7 in a battle with #2 Louisiana State (Shaquille O'Neal was on hand to watch)... Finally, the #11 Georgia Bulldogs lost 16-12 (sorry, Kate!) to South Carolina.
Well, it's week one of the NFL season today so there will be a full slate of games to cover for tonight's blog... Tiger Woods is in contention in the PGA event, while it appears rain is going to be the winner of this weekend's LPGA event in Arkansas - it could be shortened to 18 holes. Pedro and Johan are amongst those pitching today... I have to say this is probably my favorite month of the year as practically every major sport has something going on!
