Eli Leads Giants to Historic Super Bowl Upset!

I'm shocked and stunned and in disbelief at the same time - We have just witnessed perhaps the biggest upset in sports history!!! The New York Giants, led by Eli Manning's incredible fourth quarter beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII tonight by a 17-14 score. Manning, who was named the MVP of the game, drove the Giants 83 yards on 12 plays culminating on a 13 yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with just 35 seconds to play. Tom Brady could not move the ball on the Patriots final possession, throwing four incomplete passes. With it the Patriots run at a perfect 19-0 season ended.

Pats & Giants Make 2nd Date!

When the New York Giants sunk to 0-2 and #27 in my Week 2 NFL Rankings back on September 18th of last year, little did I think they would bounce back and be able to salvavge their season, let alone make the playoffs. Nine other teams started the year with the same 0-2 start as the Giants got off to, and none of them managed to make it back to .500 - let alone make the playoffs. In a thrilling game tonight in Green Bay, the Giants again played error-free ball. Brett Favre threw two interceptions for the Packers, the second of which proved costly as it set up the game winning 47 yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes 2:35 into the extra period to give the Giants a 23-20 win. Tynes went from potential goat to hero as he had two chances to give the Giants the lead in the fourth quarter, pulling a 43 yard field goal attempt wide left with 6:43 to go and doing the same with a 36 yarder as time expired - the latter though was more the fault of the snapper as a bad snap threw off the timing of the play.

In the early game, the New England Patriots beat the San Diego Chargers 21-12 to extend their perfect run to 18 games. The Chargers scored one more time than the Patriots and also turned the ball over one fewer time, but once again the Patriots took care of business when it counted. Tom Brady threw for two scores and Lawrence Maroney had a one yard touchdown run to account for the Patriot scoring. The Chargers could never get in the end zone against the "bend but don't break" Patriots defense, settling for four field-goals by Nate Kaeding. The Chargers defense forced three Brady interceptions, including one in the end zone with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter to keep them in the game. The injured TE Antonio Gates and RB LaDainian Tomlinson were non-factors for the Chargers as Gates only caught two passes for 17 yards, and Tomlinson only touched the ball three times before being pulled out of the game early in the first quarter by coach Norv Turner.

What would have a healthy Chargers team done against the Patriots? None of us really knows, but the Pats certainly seem like a team of destiny. One more win and they become the first team to ever go 19-0 in a season. It almost seems impossible to be talking about that! The Giants and Patriots now get two weeks to prepare for the rematch of their December 29th, 2007 thriller where the Pats ran their regular season record to a perfect 16-0. For a second time, the New York Giants stand in the way of this season's New England Patriots making history. Will the Giants be able to make some history of their own this time, or will the Patriots accomplish what many thought was unthinkable in this age of parity in the NFL? In two weeks we get to find out!

Patriots Get To 17-0...

... to move within two games of perfection with a 31-20 defeat of the Jacksonville Jaguars... and as I predicted they once again didn't cover the spread. So, I got both games right today!

As in many games of late, the Patriots opponent kept things close early, and then collapsed late. The Jaguars scored on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead, but the Patriots answered right back. The game went into halftime tied at 14-14. From there, Tom Brady and the Patriots offense took over as the 2007 NFL MVP led them to third quarter scores on touchdown passes to Wes Welker and Benjamin Watson. Brady had numbers more like you'd expect in playing a video game: 26-for-28 (a crazy 93.3% completion percentage) for 262 yards to go along with three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Jaguars offense couldn't get things going in the second half, settling for two Josh Scobee field goals.

The Patriots await the winner of tomorrow's game between the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers for the AFC Championship and their continued persuit of the 19-0 perfect season...

And Then There Were 8...

While I attempt to cool my blood down a little, I will take some time out to talk a little football. Eight teams are left in the NFL Playoffs, and four games will be played this weekend to determine who is going to play in the respective league championships. In the NFC, the Dallas Cowboys will take on the New York Giants for the third time this season, while the Green Bay Packers will welcome the Seattle Seahawks into the "frozen tundra"... The AFC offers us a rematch between Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers, while the Jacksonville Jaguars attempt to put an end to the New England Patriots dreams of a 19-0 season.

Saturday's games both have a good chance of being blowouts, while Sunday's games should be closer. Of course, after how badly I did this past weekend - one of four right on the pros, while I incorrectly predicted that Ohio State would beat up on LSU in the BCS championship, perhaps you should take my opinions with a grain of salt.

In the early game, the Packers square off against the Seahawks. Look for both teams to attempt to throw the ball a lot in the cold conditions. Presently, the forecast high is 32 degrees with a 20% chance of snow. Neither team has a very impressive running game to speak of, though we all know how good Shaun Alexander can be when he's healthy. The problem for the Seahawks is that it's been 2 seasons since he was healthy. After rushing for 1880 yards in 2005, he only totalled 1610 yards the past two years. Not to mention that in 2005 he gained 5.1 yards per rush, while in 2006-2007 he averaged only 3.5 yards/attempt. For the Packers, Ryan Grant did an admirable job, rushing for nearly 1000 yards with an impressive 5.1 yards per rush average.

I believe the key to winning this game will be not turning the ball over. This means that Matt Hasselbeck and Brett Favre must not try to make a play when there isn't one available. The Packers were 2nd in the NFL in passing offense, while the Seahawks were 8th. Once again though, we know the Seahawks played a VERY soft schedule this year, while the Packers played some pretty tough teams and still came out three games better off in the win column. Look for the Packers to take this one by at least two touchdowns.

In the later game, the Patriots will take on the Jaguars. Quietly, the Jaguars took six out of their final seven meaningful games - only a 28-25 loss to the Colts kept them from winning seven straight. Most of their regulars were rested in their final game of the year, a 42-28 loss against Houston. Last week, they got up 28-10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, only to see Ben Roethlisberger pull off another of his patented 4th quarter comebacks. Jaguar QB David Garrard saved the day though, gaining 32 yards on a 4th and two play to set up Josh Scobee's game winning 25 yard field goal for a 31-29 win. The Jaguars have a VERY balanced offense - not something that you would have guessed early in the season. Garrard tossed 18 TD's against only three interceptions during the regular season, while the duo of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew totalled nearly 2,000 yards on the ground, scoring 14 times.

The Patriots stormed out of the gate of course, running up the score on their first eight opponents, before the Colts finally gave them a scare in week 9 (a close 24-20 comeback win). From there, the Patriots looked quite beatable. In fact, four of their final six contests were decided by 10 points or less. The Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens both came close to beating them, as the Patriots struggled to three point wins. The Giants came close to ruining their perfect season in week 17, but they too came up three points short. Tom Brady tossed a record 50 TD passes, 23 to Randy Moss (for a record as well)... Even though the Patriots were number one in the league in passing, they were only 13th in rushing. If the Jaguars are going to pull the upset, they will need to force the Patriots to run the ball. Look for this to be a closer game than predicted, with the Patriots winning by about a touchdown.

Tomorrow, I'll look at the Sunday matchups.

Patriots Complete 16-0 Perfect Season

The New England Patriots made NFL history tonight becoming the 2nd team ever to go through a season undefeated with a 38-35 win over the New York Giants at the Meadowlands in New Jersey tonight. Tom Brady also tossed his 50th touchdown pass of the year and Randy Moss caught his 23rd TD pass. Both set new NFL records. Congrats to the Patriots on their amazing 2007 season!

Patriots & Dolphins Still Perfect!

Not to really anyone's surprise, the Miami Dolphins lost again early Sunday afternoon to the Buffalo Bills by a 38-17 score to continue their winless season. In the evening, the Pittsburgh Steelers tried to put the first blemish on the New England Patriots season. Early on, the game was close, and the Patriots only led 17-13 at halftime. But Tom Brady and the defense took control of the game in the second half and carried the Patriots to a 34-13 win.

The Dolphins are still the only team to go through a season undefeated. It's pretty ironic that they are in the midst of their worst season ever at 0-13 while the Patriots take a run at their 1972 record-setting season.

Next week, the Dolphins take on Baltimore Ravens at home. If they lose, they will equal the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccanneers at 0-14. The Patriots get arguably the second worst team in the NFL at the moment in the New York Jets next week. A win against the Jets will make them only the second team ever to go 14-0 in a season, equalling those 1972 Dolphins.

And guess what? In week 16, the Patriots take on the Dolphins. I wonder what the point spread for that one will be?? 30+ points? It could be a record for sure!

Pats Get To Double Digits...

After a week off to heal from their close call against the Indianapolis Colts, the New England Patriots were back at it against the Bills in Buffalo last night. The Bills actually were one of the NFL's hottest teams, winning four straight games. Did that matter to the Pats? Hardly. Four quarters later, the Bills were just left in a cloud of dust as the Patriots beat them every possible way by a final score of 56-10. Tom Brady had ANOTHER nearly perfect day, going 31 of 39 for 373 yards and five touchdown passes, four of which went to Randy Moss. By my count, only one of the Moss TD's last night should have been called back for offensive pass interference... Gotta love the "Randy rules"... Why Moss is routinely allowed to get away with pushing off defenders (especially in the end zone) is beyond me. I guess if the referees are going to let you get away with it, you just keep on doing it until they start pulling out those yellow flags. Somehow though, I don't think that's going to happen... as even the zebras seem to be caught up in the hype of the Pats now 10-0 start to the 2007 season.

Regardless of how you feel about Moss, Brady, coach Bill Belichick and the rest of the Patriots, there is little doubt that this team is amongst the best ever assembled. They have scored 411 points in 10 games - a ridiculous 41.1 point per game pace... Brady's got 38 touchdown passes now... he's back on pace for 61! Moss has 16 of those 38 TD receptions himself... Can anyone beat them??? I don't see the Philadelphia Eagles playing with them with or without QB Donovan McNabb next Sunday, and they should make mincemeat of the Baltimore Ravens the following Monday night to get to 12-0. In week 14, they do face the 7-3 Pittsburgh Steelers - a team which at times this year has looked brilliant. At other times though, the Steelers have looked a little inept such as yesterday when they lost in overtime 19-16 to the hapless New York Jets... Will Big Ben and company be able to keep up and end the Patriots streak??? Time will tell...

Colts, Pats Make a Date...

On a day when I won all seven of my ESPN fantasy football league games, the two most dominant teams in the NFL certainly made it very clear that they are head and shoulders above the rest.

In the early morning games, the Indianapolis Colts got down early as the Carolina Panthers took over 11 minutes of the first quarter in driving the ball 80 yards in 18 plays. The time-consuming drive culminated in a 3-yard touchdown run by former UCLA Bruin DeShaun Foster. The Colts quickly drove down to the Panther two yard line on their first possession of the game, but had to settle for a 20-yard Adam Vinatieri field goal. The first quarter ended with the Panthers leading 7-3.

The Colts offense sputtered early, going three-and-out and then fumbling the ball away deep inside their own territory on their next two possessions. Vinny Testaverde drove the Panthers inside the Colts 10 yard line, but couldn't convert the opportunity as Antoine Bethea intercepted a poor pass from Testaverde in the end zone on a third down play with 6:37 to play.

Late in the first half, Peyton Manning and the vaunted Colts offense began to come to life. The Colts engineered an eight play, 86 yard drive in just under two minutes, culminating in a two yard Joseph Addai run. The Colts took a 10-7 lead into halftime.

The second half started the same way the first half ended - with the Colts in complete control of the momentum. Manning drove the Colts 60 yards in just eight plays, finishing things with a four yard pass to Addai to make it 17-7. Two possessions later, the Colts struck again, as Manning hit wide receiver Reggie Wayne pefectly in stride with a 59 yard pass to make it a 24-7 Colt lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In that final frame, the Colts would score again, as Addai would finish off a 12 play, 55 yard drive with a 12 yard run. At 31-7, this one was over. With the win, the Colts moved their unblemihsed record to 7-0...

The only question left was whether the New England Patriots would be able to take care of business this afternoon against the Washington Redskins so that next week's battle between the Patriots and Colts in Indianapolis would pit two undefeated teams. Unfortunately, the answer to that one was a resounding YES! :(

In the interest of time, space, and wanting to put this one out of my mind as quickly as possible, I will make this a short (and not so sweet) summary... I'll just say it was a massacre! Pats 52, Skins 7. Tom Brady had his standard 29-for-38 day with 306 yards and three more touchdown passes to give him an even 30 for the year. Brady also scored twice on rushing plays for five more total TD's. That would be 42 fantasy points in your standard Yahoo league and 36 in the ESPN one. Thankfully, I didn't face Brady in any of my leagues this week!

On the bright side, the Redskins are still 4-3, and are still looking like a team that could make the NFC playoffs... of course since the Colts and Patriots are so much better than all of the NFC teams, it seems that whomever happens to get to the Super Bowl out of the NFC this year is going to have their work cut out for them BIG TIME!!! The New York Giants did happen to win their sixth straight game today 13-10 (in Wembley, England against the hapless Dolphins), so maybe they will emerge as good competition for the two AFC juggernauts over the season's final two months.

While the Colts and Patriots continued to show why they're incredible teams, the San Diego Chargers were just happy to be safe and sound and playing at their home field today. Just two days after Quallcomm Stadium stopped being used as an evacuation facility for those affected by the California wildfires, the Chargers took on the Houston Texans in an afternoon game... and much like New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, the game provided a sense of calm, relief, and normalcy to the community. The Chargers struck early and often as the Chargers dismantled the visitors 35-10. Tight end Antonio Gates only caught three balls on the day, but two of them went for scores, making his fantasy owners like me very happy! Although the Chargers were outgained on offense by a 367-237 yard margin, the key to them winning was simply holding onto the ball. The Texans had five turnovers, while the Chargers had none. At 4-3, the Chargers moved into a tie with the idle Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC Western division lead.

Brady's Bunches!!!

No, I am not a New England Patriots fan, and no I'm not really a big Tom Brady fan (and neither is Carrie Underwood usually from what I found out today on a radio interview)... Carrie is actually playing in a fantasy football league this year and her team is 5-1 (yes, that's better than any of my teams!) Since Carrie is a huge Dallas Cowboys fan and is friends with QB Tony Romo, she wanted him on her fantasy team. But Carrie couldn't make the draft and she got stuck with Brady on autopick instead. Poor Carrie... NOT!

Romo's had a very good year so far for the Cowboys despite that one five interception game, tossing 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions on the year for a very nice 95.6 quarterback rating. Those are nice numbers, but pale in comparison to what Carrie's fantasy QB has done. Brady has tossed a ridiculous 27 touchdown passes in the season's first seven games!!! He's on pace for 61 TD's!!! 61???!!! That number is normally associated with baseball and Yankee legend Roger Maris (Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961 - a record which stood for nearly 40 years). Perhaps more incredibly, Brady has tossed just two interceptions so far on the year - he's on pace for four... His QB rating is a ridiculous 137.9. About the only record he's not on pace to break is Dan Marino's yardage record of 5,084 - but hey, he could get onto that pace pretty easily as his 2007 pace would take him to "only" 4,857 yards at the moment...

In yesterday's 49-28 Patriots win over the hapless (and now 0-7) Miami Dolphins, Brady's line looked more like something you'd see on your Playstation: 21 of 25 passes for 354 yards, six touchdown passes and no interceptions for a perfect 158.3 QB rating! I don't know how many times it has happened, but yesterday he had two more touchdown passes than incompletions! That's CRAZY!!! Where's a stat guru when you need one? OK, I am one, but I'll have to do some digging! :)

Where do Brady and his 7-0 Patriots go from here? None of us truly knows, all I do know is this run of his over the first seven games of the 2007 season is as impressive as anything as I've ever seen in all of my years of watching the NFL.
